Paul Phelps is a native of the Midwest, the son of an electrical engineer and a primary school teacher. He completed his undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. With a strong interest in world cultures, Paul spent his junior year abroad at the University of Lancaster, England where he studied physical chemistry and history. After graduation, he worked for two years as a Research Associate at MIT. There he created transgenic fruit flies which contributed to the discovery of a protein that regulates thermotaxis, and his first scientific publication. Paul attended medical school at Drexel University College of Medicine. He again spent a year abroad, this time as a Fulbright Scholar at the world's most productive eye hospital in Madurai, India. It was during this time that Paul was first exposed to Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This experience resulted in his first case report describing a new entity within oculoplastics. Paul was honored at his medical school graduation with an award for Medical Humanities for his independent research on the evolution of ophthalmology as a specialty in the 18th and 19th centuries. During his residency at the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Paul was given the Research Project of the Year award for his work on the Emergency Room Diagnosis and Treatment Study, which he presented at ARVO. After residency, Paul completed a fellowship with Daniel M. Albert at the University of Madison, Wisconsin in Ophthalmic Pathology. Paul is a member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Oncologists and Pathologists and completed an ASOPRS fellowship at Albany Medical Center. He currently works at NorthShore University HealthSystem in the northern suburbs of Chicago. In his off time, he enjoys running, downhill skiing, and traveling. He also enjoys spending time with his wife and family.
